This will be a beginner’s guide to help you prepare for your first-ever bike race
- Stay in shape : Strength training and flexibility training is important to prepare you for a bike race. It builds endurance, improves technique, reduces muscle soreness, increases power, increases bike speed, increases quickness and durability, uses the muscles more efficiently, lessens or eliminates injury, and develops a better sense of balance
- Stay hydrated : Dehydration during a bike race will impede your pace and increase dizziness, loss of focus and feel behind dehydration. You need to drink more than you are usually accustomed to. Water is during the workout, not during the race. Drinking a lot of water helps minimize the risk of dehydration during the race.
- Cut back on eating : No need for fast food during the competition. Eat protein and complex carbohydrates as much as possible. You can snack on supply bars or keep quick snacks on hand. This will help you keep your energy up and feel good.
- Unprepared for the weather : Organization of bike clothing, shoes, socks, gloves, hydration pack, spare bike, and bike repair kits is necessary. Expect the unexpected weather. If the weather is hot, ride earlier in the day. Critical mistake people make is loss of composure because they are scared of the obviously hot weather. There is nothing inherently dangerous about hot weather. When the temperature rises, the temperature of the air drops. Thermal protectors are better than insect repellents.
- Mechanical gears : Expect the going to be demanding. Do the math. There are thirty to one hundred percent more mechanical parts in a bike than there are in an automobile. It is better to have a spare worn piece than an expensive mechanism go wrong.

- Rules are rules : Do not violate them. Ride on the sidewalk so that drivers will know it is there and be a danger of hitting you. Ride far enough to avoid conflict with pedestrians. Always keep enough room between you and the next bike or person coming out of the shop. When you cannot avoid conflict, be firm but courteous. Do not ride too close to the shops. Know how to reserve the right lane. Do not ride on the pavement, especially at stoplights. It may decrease your ability to navigate around oncoming traffic. You may carry more weight and longer Insurance if you distance yourself from the car. Let the car drivers know your intention to pass on the right hand side. Nowhere is safe than on the sidewalk because there is greater room for stuff like rocks, gravel, tires and conveniently placed trash.
